FILM FESTIVALS ABOUT BORDERS, DIASPORAS, MULTI-SITUATED IDENTITIES, …

The first half of the last year 2020 I will have spent more time in front of a “screen” than usual, like many people due to the COVID-19 pandemic confinement, but especially among other tasks and training also presenting the short THIS TIME YES at film festivals by virtual platforms.

In this process, always with the border mental chip -in its multiple manifestations- I could not avoid compiling the festivals dedicated to administrative, ethnic, diasporas, imagined communities, multisituated communities, islands, identities, … discarding those specific about immigration, refuge, of course not travel (in a playful sense), human rights, indigenous people, … or not unless they intermingle, which many times is not easy and can be subject to interpretation. But including at the same time those who, due to their “methodology” themselves were and promoted a transnational and interstate way of working: content, equipment, filming, projections. Always from the FESTHOME platform, which is where the aforementioned short was registered to compete and above all to disseminate.

Frame from The Man Who Killed Liberty Valance (John Ford, 1962). The first film of the American West that I understood in terms of the border, analyzing it in class on Anthropology of the Borders.

And there are experiences at least, for me, unexpected that constitute pleasant surprises. It seems that it is a more widespread interest than it might think and it is usually spread. Here you have it classified for you. This is the list of findings, at least those that still exist or have their active links (to consult the contributions they made), and by categories *.

Will it surprise you too?

BORDERS

FRONTEIRAS

(Not found in Festhome: it is a cinema sample but I decided to include it because of its orientation so #sociologing “#antropologing” though this time I have not focused on samples or cycles)

Its objective is to disseminate cinematographic productions that have borders as their theme: physical, emotional, material, geographical, sexual, religious, mental borders, among others.

IDENTITIES

African Diaspora Cinema Festival

It is based on the principle that being African is a bond that goes beyond geography, birth or lineage as people of African origin are spread throughout the world and Africa is also home to many non-Africans.

Festival de Cinema Itinerante da Língua Portuguesa

International event dedicated to the audiovisual segment, whose objective is to promote dissemination, interculturality, social inclusion and cultural exchange between Portuguese-speaking countries.

Houston Asian American Pacific Islander Film Festival

(It has to do with the following category “islands” but since it is about those who live outside of them even if they come from island territories or are descendants of islanders, it has a place in this section)

ISLANDS

Les Insulaires

The objective of the Les Insulaires festival is to gather every year the inhabitants of the West Islands in the French Atlantic and the French Channel.

METHODOLOGY

Cinema on the borders

Itinerant film tour by populations of the Andean Community and Chile that suffer cultural exclusion with documentary film workshops among other activities.

38 RETINAS

It is an annual itinerant film festival, which aims to bring the best of short films and audiovisuals from any corner of the world to the 38 municipalities of the El Bierzo region (Spain) that so desire.

Nova Frontier Film Festival

It is one of those that could be awarded the label of multiculturalism or interculturality, at the most, but since they work on these issues with cinematographic language and in different places I have introduced it as an example.

Festival Itinérant de Cinéma Afrikabok Sénégal

Bringing and transmitting the animated image to the populations most frequently deprived of it, based on the tools of itinerant cinema, mobilizing and involving populations, audiences, artists in carrying out participatory actions, where the different communities are invited to celebrate together each scale of the tour, first about the cinema, and also thanks to the participation of griots, dancers, narrators, comparsas and traditional groups.

It is clear that precisely delimiting borders between their approaches costs a lot but it is a mini-panorama of the state of this genre. If you know of any more, you even participate in it, or have any correction or update regarding the festivals named here, do not hesitate to comment and / or contact me to complete the information.

Samples, cycles, thematization by areas or cultural origins, … could be expanded in successive posts if more material and time are found. Enjoy these ones.
